"Family Connection is responsive to the needs of our community and is involved in many programmatic efforts. Family Connection has been and remains a major contributor in making a difference in the lives of children and families in Shelby County."
Judge Jim Kramer, Shelby County Juvenile Court
Family Connection was founded by community volunteers, who opened the organization’s Emergency Shelter in 1976. It is through the generous support of community volunteers, business leaders and donors that Family Connection has been able to continue its mission of strengthening communities by building strong youth and families.
Our History…Initially known as Shelby Youth Services and Attention Home, the agency opened its doors for at-risk children and youth in 1976. Due to the increasing number of students and families requesting counseling assistance, a School Counseling Program began six year later (1982). Through this program, a Counselor was available to go in the public schools and provide counseling assistance to children and youth in crisis situations. In 1983, the agency expanded its shelter services to include runaway and homeless youth. In 1986, the agency purchased 22-acres of land and built an 18 bed shelter facility which also housed the administrative offices. Since that time, we opened Project HOPE Street Outreach Services in Birmingham (1992) and built a Community Counseling Center on our Alabaster campus (2004).
